We presented more than a century of teaching in one museum.
The Museum of Special Education in Levoča opened its first exhibition of 2015 entitled “School in Retrospection.” The visitors could see the first ABC book for Slovak blind pupils, a school desk from the 1950s, small slate boards, or even a traditional school bell.
The vernissage took place on April 16, 2015, at 17:00 in the exhibition hall. The development of special schools, school classrooms, and teaching aids in Slovakia were introduced to visitors. The origin and use of individual subjects and special aids were explained to them, too. “A visitor with a disability had the opportunity to compare the current teaching aids that he or she could encounter in the teaching process with aids from the last century. A non-disabled visitor got acquainted with teaching in a special school and came into contact with the teaching aids that are still used or used in these schools,” says Mgr. Michaela Kočišová, the curator of the exhibition. The time frame of the exhibition was limit to the cross-section of the 20th century up to the present.
All the visitors were welcome at the exhibition. Regardless of age, always with the adapted interpretation of the guide and working material. The commentary of the tour guide was supplement by authentic collection items from the collection of the Museum of Special Education in Levoča, the Podtatranské Museum in Poprad, the Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves, as well as teaching aids from the JFR Grammar School and United Boarding School (for the blind) in Levoča.
Visitors had the opportunity to visit the exhibition until July 3, 2015.
