Schools for the Hearing Impaired in Bratislava

United Boarding School, Hrdličkova Street, Bratislava is a follow-up to the first Institution for the Hearing Impaired in Bratislava. At present the school provides education to pupils with hearing impairment, hearing and multiple impairment and to pupils with speech disorders. 174 pupils including children of Special Kindergarten attend the school in the school year 2016/17.

In 1955 the first school for the somewhat deaf with 19 students, named The First 8-Year Secondary School for the Deafish, was established in Bratislava in Podjavorinská Street. In1958 the school had been moved to Hroboňova Street and in 1960 a dormitory for the 40 students was established at the school. At present the school title is: Elementary Boarding School with Kindergarten for the Hearing Impaired Children and Pupils, Drotárska Street, Bratislava and provides education to pupils with hearing loss, to pupils with combined and multiple impairment and to pupils with speech disorders.

There are some specifics of the school: focus on an oral method, logopaedics care reinforcement, elements of Montessori pedagogy and a supportive therapeutical programme. 119 pupils including Special Kindergarten attend the school in the school year 2016/17.

complete secondary vocational education with a school leaving exam – a study programme (four-year in a 5-year preparation for the sensory impaired): mechanical engineering, promotional graphics, mechanic, electrotechnician, computer network mechanic, female cosmetician make-up artist, cosmetician

secondary vocational education with the certificate of apprenticeship – a study programme (three-year in a 4-year preparation for the sensory impaired): upholsterer, gardener, polygrapher-bookbinder, hairstylist, technical-administrative worker, artist blacksmith locksmith

lower secondary vocational education – a two-year study programme: mechanical engineering production, agricultural production

Apprentice School for the Hearing Impaired Students

a three-year study programme with a final exam and the certificate of appretinceship: wood-processing – furniture upholstery, polygraphic production, agricultural production

Secondary Grammar School for the Hearing Impaired Students

complete secondary comprehensive education completed by a school leaving exam – a four-year study programme in a 5-year preparation for the sensory impaired. In the school year 2016/17 a study programme has not opened due to the lack of applicants.

In the school year 2016/17 the school is attended by 82 pupils and students.
